*Modern contraceptive methods included oral contraceptives, the injection for contraceptive use, the intrauterine device and condoms. These were reported by 117 women (17.4% of the study population).

† Because of co-linearity, age not included in this model. In a model with age instead of gravidity, the adjusted odds ratios are: 0.16, 95% CI 0.06–0.43, for age < 20 years, and 0.55, 0.34–0.89, for 20–29 years (age ≥ 30 years as reference group).
